History

The Institute of Biotechnology and Food Technology, formerly known as the Department of Microbiology – Biochemistry of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, was formed in the school year 1957-1958, including 3 lecturers of microbiology and biochemistry. and 1 technician. In the school year 1959-1960, 6 lecturers joined the department and it officially became the Faculty of Food Engineering. The Faculty was the only educational institution which offered Food Technology training in Vietnam at that time.

In 1967, the Light Industry University Branch was established and the Faculty of Food Engineering became the Faculty of Food Engineering of this branch. It has been the leading training institution in our country’s food technology since then. The Faculty of Food Engineering included the departments of Microbiology – Biochemistry, Canned Food, Fermentation Industry, Sugar – Food, Tropical Plants.

After the liberation of the South of Vietnam in 1975, the Faculty of Food Engineering spent human resources including qualified lecturers and textbooks for 2 Danang Polytechnic University and Ho Chi Minh City Polytechnic University to act as the core force for the training of Food Technology Engineers in two regions of the country.
In 1977, the Light Industry University Branch was merged into Hanoi University of Technology. The Faculty of Food Engineering has become a faculty of Hanoi University of Technology.

In 1986, to meet the needs of human development in the field of Biotechnology, the Faculty of Food Technology was separated and formed two independent units, the Faculty of Food Technology and the Research Center of Biotechnology. . The Faculty of Food Technology includes the Department of General Food, Department of Sugar – Food, Department of Fermentation Technology of, Department of Tropical Plant Products Technology, and Department of Food Machinery. Research Center of Biotechnology is responsible for teaching Microbiology and Biochemistry in the training programs of the Faculty of Food Technology and implements research programs on biotechnology.

In 1996 the Faculty of Food Technology merged with the Faculty of Chemical Technology to form the Faculty of Chemical Technology, Food and Biotechnology. The departments involving in teaching and research in the field of Food Technology included Department of Crops and Food Technology, Department of Food Biotechnology, Department of Tropical Food Technology.

In 1999, the School of Biotechnology and Food Technology was established on the basis of merging 3 Departments of Food Technology – Post-Harvest Technology, Department of Food Biotechnology, Department of Tropical Food Technology with Research Center of Biotechnology and the Food Machinery group.

In 2010, the School of Biotechnology and Food Technology conducted a restructuring. The new organizational structure of the School includes 05 Departments and 02 Centers: Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Department of Biotechnology, Department of Food Technology (formed on the basis of merging 3 departments: Department of Food Technology – Post-Harvest Technology, Department of Fermentation Technology and a part of the Department of Quality Management and Tropical Foods), Department of Quality Control, Department of Food and Biological Processes and Equipment, Center for Research and Development in Biotechnology and Center for Training and Food Product Development.
